It's worth it in my opinion because it's not like the other Mario sports where you play to have fun, in Strikers you're out for blood. Carnage everywhere.

Each team has 5 players. 1 captain and 4 sidekicks. The captain can be aby one of the 8 main Nintendo characters, plus 1 unlockable. Then you pick your sidekicks from either birdos, koopas, toads, or hammer bros. THen you select the field, item limits, and so on.
